This is my very first blog interaction! I didn't think I could figure it out, but here I am! I'm proud to display my entry for the MaryJane's Farm Pinkeeper contest, a hand fashioned Hen in a basket with quilted eggs and a couple of handfashioned chicks! A winner in my book!
I am pleased to still have time for sewing in the midst of a busy gardening season. We are attempting to fill a large portion of our food needs from our very own half acre...Not easy with a family of seven, but then I always have enjoyed a challenge! I am enjoying collanders full of lettuce, spinach, and beet greens and have found delicious new ideas for using these luscious greens! We have enjoyed two meals worth of peas and are anticipating some little tomatoes soon. This year I am experimenting with eggplant and celery, two veggies I have never tried to grow at home. I am also experimenting with Lasagna Gardening. I have flowers and hot peppers doing quite well so far!

Seed saving at Kadesh
Nicole collects arugula seeds for me to share at the upcoming lady's retreat in Greenwich. We love the spicy leaves added to our summer salads. I might even get some to grow in my cold frame for winter salad!
Chicken Pen in the House
We had to move them in when the power went out and it got cool. They still need extra warmth without a mother to cuddle.
Surprise Visitor
Our monarch came into the world while we were not watching, but we stayed close by as it dried in the sun and took flight in the gorgeous day of its birth!
Smokey Mountain Mama
Just a couple more weeks and we expect some hatchlings. I'm so excited! This will be our first experience with hatching our own chicks. We have always purchased birds through McMurray in the past. Our proud mama is a three year old Black Austrolorp, a very broody girl! Her eggs are multi colored, including a couple green ones from our Auracana. We'll keep you posted!
Harvest at Kadesh
Just a sampling of the veggies we're enjoying at Kadesh. My cucumbers are fantastic, the yellow squash is heavenly, and my green beans are never ending. We also have swiss chard, turnips, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, onions, and beets to help round out our basket. Wow...this is so much fun!!
Totally Kadesh Sunshine
Sunflowers are definately a favorite! Who can resist their happy charm, especially on the farm. This one is growing in front of our home, hiding our "Farm Fresh Eggs" sign. Oh, well...let the sun shine!
Chickens Enjoying Garden Leftovers
My poultry are spoiled with fresh veggies and leftovers. They are terribly fond of our lettuce, turnip greens, spoiled tomatoes, and of course....overgrown cucumbers! Christopher's ancona is center stage here!
